The word ‘billions’ is commonly used in the worlds of the very big or the very small. It is used to express the numbers of stars across the vastness of the universe; and it is readily used for the numbers of microbes that we host.
Research into the human microbiome is opening up a landscape of useful information that we can apply to assessing a more targeted way forward to address health problems, and to afford a healthier future for ourselves.
I am in awe about the roles gut microbes have and the consequence of their activity on our health. I am equally encouraged by how dietary and lifestyle habits affect the gut inhabitants, and the interactions of the microbiome beyond the gut.
When appropriate I invite people on a Nutritional Therapy Programme to have a digestive system analysis, which includes an informative profile of their gut bacteria together with other meaningful health markers. Although there is a wealth of tests for various health markers available, a digestive system analysis can be most helpful in many circumstances.
Whether or not testing is used as part of my assessment, my mantra is ‘looking after your billions is key to looking after you’.
